Eligibility to Apply for Alexander Rutherford Scholarship

You can apply for Rutherford Scholarship when you are enrolled full-time in post-secondary education and your high school grades are officially accessible. There may be different standards for high school transcript grades.

Following is a list of Alexander Rutherford Scholarship requirements

  • He / She must be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident of Canada or Protected Person under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, (Visa students are not eligible);
  • He / She must be an Alberta resident, and to be considered an Alberta resident the following conditions must apply:
    • Before the candidate started a program of study, at least one parent or legal guardian had to have maintained permanent residency in Canada for at least 12 continuous months;
    • The applicant has a permanent place of residence in Alberta for at least a year before beginning a program of study;
    • The applicant is not eligible to receive a scholarship for any grade unless the applicant or the applicant’s parent(s)/legal guardian resided in Alberta for the duration of that grade.
  • He / She must have completed high school on or after September 30, 1980.
  • He / She must be enrolled in a full-time post-secondary or apprenticeship program of at least one semester’s duration.

Here is a step by step guide to apply for Rutherford Scholarship

Step 1

To apply for Rutherford Scholarship, Create an MyAlberta Digital ID. It is recommended to use your personal email address to create your account on StudentAid Alberta Website.

Step 2

Verify your account to activate MyAlberta Digital ID.

Step 3

Login to your Alberta Student Aid account and choose the Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship in the Apply section.

Step 4

Fill the Application form for Alexander Rutherford Scholarship

Step 5

Wait for the results. You will be notified in writing of the results of your assessment once Student Aid confirms your grades/marks on your final official high school transcript

Personal Information

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
    Your SIN will be validated with the Government of Canada before your application is reviewed.
  • Alberta Student Number (ASN)
    • Your ASN can be found on your Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement
    • If you do not have an ASN, you can request one from here Request/Lookup ASN

Selection of Winner

He / She must have a student must have a minimum combined average in at least one grade based on five designated courses. Grades 10, 11, or 12 as determined by:

  • Alberta Residents : Courses/marks on an official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement
  • Completed High School Outside Alberta : Courses/marks that appear on an official high school transcript attained in another province

Deadline to Apply for Alexander Rutherford Scholarship

There are no deadlines to apply for Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. You can Apply for Rutherford Scholarship as soon as your official high school grades are available and you are enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies, apply online.

Rutherford Scholarship Payout

Once Student Aid confirms your grades/marks on your final official high school transcript, you will be notified in writing of the results of your assessment. If you qualify, Student Aid will send a request to your post-secondary institution to confirm your enrollment:

Apply before beginning post-secondary studies:
By the end of your first month of study, your school will have received a request for Confirmation of Enrollment.

Apply during or after post-secondary education:
One month after your application is approved, your school will receive a request for Confirmation of Enrollment.

Note : After receiving the request for Confirmation of Enrollment, your school has 30 days to respond. If Student Aid does not receive confirmation within the said time frame of 30 days, you will be sent a confirmation of enrollment form to take directly to your school. Within 30 days, the completed form must be submitted to Student Aid.

Alberta Student Aid will mail you a cheque within one month of your enrollment or attendance being confirmed by your post-secondary institution.
