Heath Lambert writes about how Christians can begin to experience victory over the power of pornography in his new book Finally Free. He understands the problem facing Christians who are viewing pornography from counseling hundreds of struggling people. He writes, not to scare people away from pornography by showing its ugliness, but to give them a big picture of God’s grace that empowers them to experience genuine freedom.
The first chapter is both the foundation and the center for the rest of the book. It begins with what Lambert calls “breathtakingly good news.” “Jesus Christ died to set you free from every sin that can be committed. That includes pornography.” The rest of the opening chapter explains this good news and shows how God’s grace sets people free. Too often we only think of how grace covers our sins, and it does, but grace also transforms the person who belongs to Jesus. In particular Lambert says that grace empowers the Christian to live in new ways. He also discusses in this chapter the relationship between grace and repentance and grace and hope. He shows how grace leads us to repentant living and how it produces the hope that we can indeed see victory over sin.
The other nine chapters are built upon the foundation of the first. A person reading Finally Free cannot act as if grace is one strategy to fight against pornography. Instead, grace must be seen as the indispensable power that helps a person implement the other strategies to fight for purity. Each strategy is carefully crafted to help the reader think clearly about the best way for them to see victory.
Here is how I would recommend that a person read Finally Free. Go through the first chapter slowly. Think deeply about the death of Jesus for you and the grace that God offers you. See that grace, and not personal hard work, provides the power to fight for purity. Next, pick and choose which of the nine chapters to read next. They do not necessarily build on each other. Look through the table of contents and see which strategies look like they would be the most helpful for you personally and read through those chapters carefully.
I highly recommend Finally Free. Heath Lambert recognizes the seriousness of pornography, and so he attacks it with the most powerful weapon that exists- the Gospel. He shows clearly how the Gospel is the foundation for the fight for purity, and then explains helpful strategies to implement.
